Plaster

Today I found some plaster surfaces I prepared last year but never got around to doing anything with them. I made them by mixing up some plaster, and just as it was ready to set, I used a spatula to spread it over a piece of burlap.  Then I flipped it over to dry on a piece of plexiglass.  The surface is very smooth except for air bubbles.  I experimented with it today and found it takes graphite pencil very well, but colored pencil, not so much.  I tried to use some gouache and that turned out to be challenging because the plaster soaked up the water before I had much chance to spread the pigment.  Thats okay with me though.  I like way its slows the process down.  I also like the difficulty for some reason.  I wonder if I use a little sand paper and scuff up the surface if the colored pencil will be more effective.  Another cool thing about plaster is I can carve into it as shown in yesterdays photos.
