Wednesday I went to Big Basin, the sight of the lightning complex fire of 2020. Three years post fire and so many trees are showing signs of new growth it was great to see. Animals are returning also. I saw baby quail, dear and various birds.

I spent some time with the puppet in the forest checking out backgrounds and lighting. I made a compilation of the video and pictures from the visit. Here is a link.

On Saturday I went to Nicene Marks, a forest near my house, next to the creek where I plan to film the floating characters. Lighting is challenging. I trimmed the base of the small creatures and they look better. Here is a link to some pictures and a sequence of stop motion from my exploration of Nicene Marks.

Here is the piano scroll paper I dyed red and may use for the heart opening sequence and new layer of skin.

Since we last checked in I am thinking a lot about narrative for this animation and came across a video of someone who’s work I enjoy, Cecelia Condit. Interestingly the subject matter in this particular video is about her friends ectopic pregnancy and the night she almost died. I started thinking about my own abortion video, Red Wave and feel like the way she uses narrative could really work well for both Red Wave and My Person.

Here are links to her website and video.

Summary for the week: Overall things are taking a bit longer than I had imagined. I thought I would just show up in the forest and shoot a bunch of pictures like I did last summer in the studio. Being outside presents a lot more variables related to lighting and background. Writing some sort of narrative will also take some time, but I am excited to explore this idea.
