Today was the first day of the 16mm film class. I feel the discomfort and daunting overwhelm of starting something completely new and out of my wheel house. Geez! What have I gotten myself into? The learning curve will be steep. We will be divided into six groups and each group will make one short (1 minute) film over the entire quarter. Unlike the digital format, 16mm really needs a crew to shoot a film. Fortunately the students in the class seem to be a diverse bunch and they are all really into making movies. It will be very time intensive though. I think I am getting cold feet. I think I will hang on another week before dropping the class to see if I start feeling more comfortable. The editing class looks like its a good fit and I will defiantly be able to grow some new useful skills in that class.
I am looking forward to tomorrow to catch up on my art making. I was over the hill nearly 11 hours today and not able to work on my art projects. The photo shared above is a still from a video I made with a friend last summer. I had the fortunate delight of spending the day with Kris Liu our cohorts retired TA, and recent graduate student from the SAIC Film Department. Kris is currently working on her film, a documentary of her video exchange with her mom. The project began during Covid when for three years she was unable to return home to China because of the lockdown and travel restrictions. She and her mom communicated through video exchanges and this is the core footage of her film.
We began our time together with the idea of an interview about the story behind her film and the challenges she has faced in creating it. Very quickly we moved to social, political subjects related to China and Kris’s personal experiences growing up in China and living as an adult in America.
We were together for 12 hours and in that time created a stop motion video while we talked. Here is a link to the video presenting the landscape of our conversation.
